Qualitative and quantitative analysis of the n-alkanes C9-C17 and pristane in clean air masses

An analytical method was developed for measuring n-alkanes (C9 to C17) and other hydrocarbons in tropospheric air with mixing ratios of a few ppt (10−12) and higher. The hydrocarbons are collected in situ in absorption tubes, carefully protected against contamination and analysed later in the laboratory by gas chromatography. First data are reported for Atlantic air masses at the west coast of Ireland.

Movement patterns of temperate wrasses (Labridae) within a small marine protected area

The movement patterns of three commercially important wrasse (Labridae) species inside a small marine protected area (~ 0.15 km2 ) on the west coast of Norway were analysed over a period of 21 months. The mean distance between capture and recapture locations varied between 10 and 187 m, and was species and season specific. The extent of movement was not related to body size or sex. These results imply that a network of small strategically located marine protected areas can be used as management tools to protect wrasses from size- and sex-selective fishing mortality.

Diagnosis of sibling species of Drosophila involved in the colonization of North America by D. subobscura

To determine the effects of the recent colonization of the west coast of North America by the Palaearctic species Drosophila subobscura on the dynamics of the Drosophila populations, the sibling species D. athabasca and D. azteca must be classified unambiguously. We have characterized these two species using three molecular techniques: allozymes, mtDNA and RAPDs. All three techniques allow the classification of any individual as belonging to either species. The study of five localities in northern California and southern Oregon show that the area of overlap is larger than previously described.

Local cod (Gadus morhua) revealed by egg surveys and population genetic analysis after longstanding depletion on the Swedish Skagerrak coast

Abstract Dramatic and persistent reductions in Atlantic cod (Gadus morhua) are common in many coastal areas. While offshore cod stocks still were abundant and productive, the Swedish west coast showed signs of diminishing adult cod abundance at the beginning of the 1980s, where the local cod component was considered to be extirpated. To survey the present cod spawning activity and stock composition, we initiated egg trawling over two consecutive years (203 hauls in total) in combination with population genetic analyses (425 individually genotyped eggs). Daily Peak Temperature Forecasting with Elman Neural Networks

This work presents a forecaster based on an Elman artificial neural network trained with resilient backpropagation algorithm for predicting the daily peak temperatures one day ahead. The available time series was recorded at Petrosino (TP), in the west coast of Sicily, Italy and it is composed by temperature (min and max values), the humidity (min and max values) and the rainfall value between January 1st, 1995 and May 14th, 2003. Performances and reliabilities of the proposed model were evaluated by a number of measures, comparing different neural models. Experimental results show very good prediction performances.

Showdown in South America: James Scrymser, John Pender, and United States–British Cable Competition

The British dominated the world's submarine cable business over the second half of the nineteenth century, but they encountered significant challenges in the 1880s and 1890s—especially from James Scrymser, an upstart entrepreneur from New York. Scrymser exploited a strategic gap in the cable system in the Western Hemisphere and became locked in a confrontation along the west coast of South America with John Pender, the leading British cable magnate. Scrymser gained the upper hand in Chile by outmaneuvering Pender and used this victory to expand his operations with the telegraph network that linked South America, North America, and Europe.

ABSTRACT During the last few years, considerable efforts have been devoted to the tracing of halogenated hydrocarbons, particularly DDT and PCB, and of mercury in Baltic animals. These investigations have already produced some important generalizations, which may be summarized as follows: (1) The concentrations of halogenated hydrocarbons and mercury in the tissues of Baltic animals are in general higher than those found in the corresponding species on the west coast of Sweden and in the Norwegian waters. Planning Punic cities: Geophysical prospection and the built environment at Motya, Sicily

The urban plan of ancient Motya on the Isola di San Pantaleo on the west coast of Sicily and its relationship to developments in Phoenician and Punic societies have been investigated since the early 1960s. Data from geophysical surveys in the north-eastern quadrant of Motya show the regular organisation of urban insulae framed by two broad roads. These results, combined with data from previous nearby excavations, improve the modelling of Motya's layout, and contribute to the wider discussion of Phoenician/Punic and broader Mediterranean urban traditions between the sixth and fourth centuries BC.
